Housing

A persistent barrier individuals returning from incarceration face is housing. Too many people return home only to find they don’t know where that is. Project RETURN walks with clients on this journey, helping navigate Milwaukee's housing landscape and find safe homes for our people.
TRANSITIONAL REENTRY HOUSING

In March 2025, our nonprofit expanded to begin providing short-term apartments to men who had served their sentence but demonstrated an acute need for housing upon release. This is our Bridge Housing program, through which Project RETURN now manages 12 apartments in our new headquarters, on the second floor of the Historic Tenth Street Residences at 1004 N. 10th St. in Downtown Milwaukee.

Project RETURN anticipates the typical length of stay to be around six months as the men reacclimate to living in the community, secure employment, save money, and continue working toward stability and self-sufficiency. All of our existing programs remain available to the public as well as to the new residents.

"At Project RETURN, we believe in action. We know that housing is the pre-eminent need in Milwaukee, especially for our formerly incarcerated brothers and sisters. That’s why Project RETURN is taking on this initiative: because we know it will make a difference for our community and the people we serve. Above all, these men will be able to live with dignity in a community where they are understood, accepted and supported.”

– Wendel Hruska, Project RETURN executive director

STUDY: Of the 2,475 people returning to MKE from incarceration each year, 42% are in need of stable housing.
